Wahine Toa Programme
The inspiring Wahine Toa (“Women of Strength”) programme, provides support for young women who have been the victims of sexual abuse.
Founded and run by Hawkes Bay policewomen Sue Guy and Sue Robinson, the programme takes girls and supporting friends away on a week-long retreat where they undergo in-depth counselling, listen to inspiring speakers, have life skill coaching and fun too.
The Max Foundation pledges $2,500 towards the costs of its next retreat.
Finding Hope Charitable Trust
The Christchurch based Finding Hope charitable trust “Just Breathe”, a national online support group for women suffering post-natal depression (PND).
PND is reported to affect one in seven mothers, many of whom struggle with it undiagnosed and feeling alone.
Finding Hope aims to eventually have physical support groups throughout NZ and centres where mothers can stay to get rest and support to aid their recovery.

Team Kokiri
The third recipient is national waka racing champions, Wellington’s Team Kokiri, .
The team pride themselves on being an inspiration to the many women who have taken up the sport, and give back to the community by offering coaching.
The team has paddled annually for the last three years at teh national Waka Ama Sprint and intend to do so again in 2009.
They cite health and wellbeing as two key motivators to continued success.
The Max Foundation for New Zealand Women pledges $750 to pay for their registration and uniforms for the National Waka Ama Sprint Champs to be held at Lake Karapiro.
