Artist
Susan Rose
Scott Kara from the NZ Herald called her ‘Lovely’, Marcus Lush referred to her voice as ‘A
voice of an angel’, and that’s just the media.
For Susan Rose, the ever humble 30 year old
singer who has performed over 1000 shows in her career, touring the world with her music
and performing in such far reaching territories as Dubai, the UK for two years and even
Uganda in Africa, it’s all about singing to the public who currently can’t get enough of her
since her success on Maori Television’s Homai Te Pakipaki.
Born and bred in Wairoa or more precisely Frasertown, the former Head Girl of Wairoa
College made her first major foray into the professional music scene in 1998 when she
joined the band Alive after being spotted by the band at a local Karaoke contest.
What followed was a whirlwind of road miles, concert dates, tours and travel as Alive toured
the country backing overseas tribute shows and performing their own. ‘It was a steep learning
curve, learning how to keep my voice in shape and bringing my A‐Game to the stage every
night.’
After welcoming in the Millennium as the headline act at Napier’s Soundshell in front
of over 30,000 people, Alive then turned their attention abroad. In 2001 Susan travelled to
Dubai to take up a contract at The Hard Rock Café with Alive as the resident band. ‘This was
six nights a week, 4 sets a night’ Susan says ‘It’s where I learnt my trade’.
In three short years the shy humble girl from Wairoa had gone from entering a local pub karaoke contest to performing worldwide.
Now back in NZ, Susan Rose has the ability and the unique quality to really stake her mark as
one of the great New Zealand female vocalists.
Having left the industry for the past 5 years
to raise her three beautiful boys, she says ‘The planets have all lined up for my return to
singing and performing.
I had lost my passion for singing which was sad but the break and motherhood have helped me put everything in perspective. Now I’m having the time of my life!’
This album sees Susan opening up and talking for the first time about her first 30 years and
her story is one of extreme high’s and low’s. ‘A lot of very personal experiences and
memories have come out on this album, but the overall feeling is definitely one of hope for
all her listeners that our experiences shape us’.
Throughout the album the influence of
Susan’s love of Maoritanga and Te Reo are woven into the songs, something that makes her
album uniquely Kiwi.
